Berlin
Monday, August 25, 2003

During her summer vacation in Europe that already took her to Sweden and Greece, Young-A also visited Matthias in Germany for a few days. After Matthias' and Christy's visit to Montana in 2002, it was great to see each other again! Here are a few impressions of our tour of Berlin and Leipzig:

Stepping out of the main train station at the zoo, the Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church) catches our eye right away. It was severely damaged during World War II bombings and remains standing today as a warning reminder of those days. Being right next to one of Germany's largest and oldest zoos, we decide to check out Berlin's Zoologischer Garten.
Matthias makes instant friends with some of the animals. Next, we walk along the main street Unter den Linden from the Brandenburg Gate to Alexanderplatz with its 365 m high communications tower.
In the evening, Andreas gives us a sightseeing tour by car - one stop is Checkpoint Charlie, formerly an important transit point between East and West Berlin. We have dinner at Potsdamer Platz - formerly a barren, empty area right in the "death strip" that separated East and West Berlin, now a super-modern office and entertainment complex.

Young-A and Andreas having "Berliner Weiße" - a local specialty drink. Thanks a lot to Andreas for being an expert "insider" tour guide! :-) The German Rail company headquarters - one of the office towers surrounding the Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz
